airpop® (EPS) has many lives
And here at HSV, we’re eager to make the most of them!
A special airpop® collection bag is now available, and it’s not only for companies; you can find the airpop® collection bag at 104 municipal waste collection points in the Netherlands. A great development for the circular economy!
Circular economy and airpop® engineered air
The circular economy is an economic system designed to maximise reusability of products and commodities and minimise value destruction.
airpop®, also known as expanded polystyrene or ‘styrofoam’, is a very high-quality, effective synthetic foam material which consists of 98% air and 2% polystyrene. As a mono-material, it is ideal for recycling and fully aligned with the principles of the circular economy.

Separated waste collection facilitates reprocessing of airpop®
Separate collection of airpop® packaging, e.g. from households, is more than cost-effective as a solution for the problem of excessive volume in residual waste collection.
In 2010, over 50 tonnes (7500 m3) of airpop® was collected.
This figure rose to 75 tonnes in 2011; projections estimate that over 500 tonnes of airpop® will be collected in 2017.
The aim is to scale up the separate collection efforts between 2017 and 2020, achieving nearly 360 municipal collection points. In tangible terms, this means that approx. 1,500-2,000 tonnes of airpop® waste can be collected and reprocessed.
It’s a great development for the circular economy; airpop® is completely recycled and put back into the production chain as a raw material for producing plastic products. airpop® has many lives!
HSV promotes and supports various sustainability initiatives, including separate collection of airpop® (EPS) waste.
