Perfect temperature for home-delivered meals from Kookland.nl

In September 2016, HSV was contacted by Ton Marsman, owner and culinary expert at Kookland. His idea: hot meals complete with flatware, prepared from honest, high-quality ingredients, ready-made and delivered to the customer’s home. Kookland is already delivering vacuum-packed cold meals, but Ton has taken this idea to the next level with this idea: a genuine logistical challenge.

The hand-prepared, authentic meals are chilled and then vacuum-wrapped. After that, final preparation takes place at the distribution points, where the meals are heated to the right temperature, beautifully arranged on the plates, and then delivered.

Ton presented his challenge to HSV: ‘How do we get these arranged plates containing these meals to the customer’s table at the right temperature, while retaining the arrangement on the plate?’
Additional challenges included:

• The limits of the outer packaging dimensions,
• the required insulating properties and
• the number of table settings that needed to fit.

Developing the dinner solution

HSV started the engineering process and developed the Kookland dinner solution, manufactured from Expanded Poly-Propylene (EPP). EPP is washable, has strong insulating properties, and is reusable: the perfect material properties for this project.

Creative as always, the HSV engineers came up with an ingenious solution. A lid designed in such a way that the arrangement of the plates remains completely intact and that the cutlery does not move.

The design phase consisted of a number of revisions which Kookland and HSV went through together. In October, HSV delivered a milling model. In March of this year, following extensive field tests and a number of revisions, the first product samples of these dinner boxes were produced.

Sustainable choice for customers

The Kookland dinner box is created using minimal raw materials and renewable energy. The Renault Twizzy (a completely electrical vehicle) is used for the delivery. A responsible and sustainable choice for customers!

During this process, HSV took responsibility for a number of aspects, facilitating the client’s needs and handling e.g. the engineering process. Ton is very satisfied with the pleasant collaboration and the final result.
