As Technical Director, I work with my team to investigate how technologies, materials – both new and existing – and innovative production methods can be used to process expandable plastics sustainably. I am also responsible for the ongoing professionalisation of HSV.
This involves expanding the range of capabilities and solutions that HSV can offer our customers on the one hand, while also transforming the design of your product into a feasible component with the desired specifications and quality.
HSV has more than 50 years’ experience
Over more than 50 years, HSV has developed a great deal of know-how. I am responsible for retaining and passing on this knowledge of materials, their properties and production methods within the company. We use the available and collected data to stabilise and optimise the processes in our production facilities.
Feasibility of the design
The particle foam engineers at HSV take account of the designer’s decisions; you can’t simply change or omit something from a design or redesign. We assess the feasibility of the design, including geometry, tolerances, discharge, types of applications, and how the mould is structured.
Materials such as PP and PS, which are both thermoplastics, are easy to work with. However, the expandable versions, EPP and EPS, respond slightly differently during manufacturing. Various factors must be taken into account when producing a product or technical component from particle foam.
If the designer has included multiple wall thicknesses, this affects the mould design, filling process, air extraction, steam distribution and cooling. For example, the steam distribution may have to be altered. Of course, there are limits to this, and sometimes a compromise must be found.

Ivo Ariëns  joined the particle foam engineers at HSV in 2016 as Operations Manager. He has a higher vocational education degree in mechanical engineering, studied business management at postgraduate level and has years of experience in technical management roles. He has extensive knowledge of materials and manufacturing techniques and contributes to sustainable innovations.
